New Dates for MBSR Courses

I am delighted to say that I attended the first National Mindfulness Conference at Tonbridge Wells in the United Kingdom on 11th March.  It was a wonderful day, very inspiring and encouraging with over 180 delegates.  The Conference was organised by the Oxford Mindfulness Centre at the University of Oxford.  There was a very strong line up of Speakers including Mark Williams whom many of you may know from his very valuable book Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy which he wrote with Zindel Segal and John Teasdale.  Tonbridge Boys School did a pilot programme in Mindfulness run over 4 week and based on the MBSR 8 week Programme for 14 year old students.  We heard the pupils’ perspective and the views and experiences of Mindfulness for them were very positive and promising.  We also heard from Jini Lavelle who is known for producing the first Course Handbook for Mindfulness in Schools for Teachers in the U.K.  Jini is now part of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre and explored training the teachers.  There are very positive plans being developed in this area which is of great interest to me.  I hope in the future that we can draw from this and offer training for our teachers here so that Mindful Schools becomes the norm in the future.

The advancement on Mindfulness in Education throughout the world is wonderful and the number of dedicated Psychologists, Psychiatrists and Educators involved in this is truly inspiring.

JON KABAT-ZINN

The Jon Kabat-Zinn evening seminiar on 29th April was enjoyed by 850 people and proved to be a wonderful experience for so many. From both my trainings under his direction and my personal contact with Jon, I am constantly reminded what a genuine man he is and how he brings this quality so truly to his work.

Anne Twohig Awarded Social Entrepreneurs Ireland 2008 Award for her work with Secondary School students.

Anne Twohig-Wall, Ananda ProgrammesAnanda Programmes presents a comprehensive and innovative programme in Mindfulness Meditation to Secondary School Students. Mindfulness is a technique for living in the now. It is a skill which provides an understanding of what gives rise to stress and how to handle anxiety more effectively.

The programme came into being after Anne gave Transition Year students an introduction to mindfulness and the importance of living with a high level of self-awareness. Their feedback and appreciation was so positive that Anne decided to adapt her adult programme and tailored it for this age group with very positive results.
